Also known as 'Memphis Minnie' will be the focus of our lessons the first week in November. I'll just say that it is poignant that we'll be analyzing the song, When The Levee Breaks. A song actually co-authored by 'Kansas' Joe McCoy. It also just so happens that something rather personal broke this weekend. Fe' sho.' And I hadn't anticipated this project being a catalyst in an of itself. But either my angels have one heck of a sense of humor, or it's just their way of winking at me while I 'do me' in this life thing.
Anywho, I made a few changes to the lesson materials based on my students' needs: clarity of instructions, more space without lines for greater access to the text, and took off the prescribed days for each answer sheet. It made sense to include historical information to put the song in context with regards to what was going on with African Americans regarding the Mississippi River Flood of 1927.
As a few extra tie-ins that might be fun for my 4th graders, we might listen to the Led Zeppelin cover; do a compare and contrast. The movie below will be valuable in conveying real life images of what the flood actually looked like- in action.
Here's a silent film made by Signal Corps of the Mississippi Flood of 1927.
