A Day In The Life

In Service.
Just yesterday I took a quiet tour taking photographs of urban art- murals, statues, images; with a prescribed list of things I had passed over time. On my bicycle I rode back and side streets- careening my head to catch the minute. Per chance I might see something unexpected.

And there he was. Martin. Dr. King. In colors of brown, black, grey, purple and white. Rendered along a wall in the name of a community rejuvenation project by artists: Ras, Terms, Desi, Wome, Bay, Abakus, Muse, Melia, Pancho and Josh.

This month, 3 players on the Barca roster were nominated for the B’alllon D’or, the prestigious, ‘World Soccer Player of the Year’ prize: Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and Lionel Messi.

On January 15th, Barcelona club President, Sandro Rosell mentioned, “It’s important to invest in homegrown players...that’s our policy and it’s the future...(of football)”

Just yesterday, January 16th, Barca extended it’s unbeaten streak to 18 games by season’s winter, outscoring league opponents 51 to 6 in it’s 13 game winning streak.

In the game of football, or soccer as we know it, everyone must work together for a common goal. Throughout the world soccer is known as the ‘beautiful game’ because of the elegance of play and humanity that comes through in service of one’s team mates.

I take such care to detail this Spanish football club, for their achievement, support, and individual commitment to something greater in the sum of their parts- together. Service of the highest order, each one of us- homegrown players- I, we are here to give back and share what it means, to be in service together for a greater good through human capital.

Just yesterday, I rode along wondering why the parking lot of my school was so full. Had I missed a memo? Was I supposed to attend some important function at the facility I spend 70% of my waking hours August through June?

But upon further attention I realized the parking lot was ‘in service’ of a different nature. Across the street lay St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church. Families walking, members clad in Purple choir robes and bright white collars capturing a winter afternoons glimmer.
For a service attendance where without a doubt, Dr. King’s name would indeed be mentioned for his deeds; as here in another light.

Today I:
Had a waffle breakfast with my son...
Ran 6 Miles at the Golden Gate Bridge...
Read the New York Times at Peet's on Fillmore...
Rode my bike around West Oakland to flick graf...
Watched the NY Jets cream the Patriots...
Copped the free Year of the Blacksmith Community Mixtape...
Graded papers...
Played guitar to my new song, Amnishen.

Live your dream.
